WinterContact TS 870 P from Continental awarded top rating in winter tire test by auto motor sport
The WinterContact TS 870 P for passenger cars and SUVs from the mid-size class upward
With the WinterContact TS 870 P, Continental is progressively replacing its successful TS 850 P. In the WinterContact TS 870 P, Continental relies on an advanced Cool Chili compound and Hydro Grooves. To increase safety for drivers who fit wider tires, the developers have deviated from the common V-profile. Instead, Continental opted for a more stable design and four large circumferential grooves between the rows of tread blocks on the WinterContact TS 870 P. This innovative tread structure, which also differs significantly from its predecessor, has clear advantages, especially in wet conditions, because it drains water from the contact surface particularly rapidly, improving handling characteristics, contributing to shorter braking distances and offering a particularly reliable defense against the dreaded aquaplaning.
Compared to the proven predecessor model, the developers improved wet braking by four percent and aquaplaning capabilities by eight percent – without sacrificing performance in other areas. Braking on ice (up 5 percent), dry handling (up 6 percent) and snow handling (up 6 percent) also deserve special mention. From an ecological point of view, Continental’s new winter tire is equally convincing. Its rolling resistance was improved by two percent and the tire life even by 16 percent.
The product range initially includes 52 articles for rims between 16 and 21 inches in diameter, with tire cross-sections from series 35 to 65 and widths from 205 to 255 millimeters – including many with rim protection ribs and/or XL markings for elevated load capacity. The approved speeds reach up to 270 km/h. This makes the WinterContact TS 870 P the ideal solution for replacing sedan, SUV and sports car tires. Thanks to its design, the stable construction also makes the tire a high performer for heavier vehicles with electric drives.
